Music

Music is a vital part of our worship at St. B’s. We embrace a rich blend of traditional and contemporary music that reflects the beauty of our Anglican heritage and the diversity of our congregation.

Sunday Worship

Organ hymns from our Anglican/Episcopal heritage interweave with contemporary music, which makes our music loft a welcome space for singers and instrumentalists of all varieties to contribute their creativity. Worship connects us across time and space – ancient and new, familiar and fresh.

Adult Choirs

Choral opportunities at St. B's include the Chamber Singers, an auditioned, mixed choir that meets regularly throughout the program year, as well as seasonal singing opportunities open to all and with a shorter time commitment.

Children’s Music

Children sing during the children’s homily (8:30 service during the school year, 9:30 in the summer) and occasionally offer music during the Offertory.

Get Involved

Do you sing or play an instrument? We'd love to welcome you. Vocalists and instrumentalists (classical and contemporary) are invited to participate in leading Sunday worship. Most musicians serve once a month, and we share music and recordings in advance to help you prepare.

Rehearsals:

  • September to May: Sundays at 7:30 a.m.

  • Summer: Sundays at 8:15 a.m.

MEET THE DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

David Madeira

Dr. David Madeira has served as Director of Music since 2014. Raised in Wheaton, IL, David holds undergraduate and master's degrees in Theory and Composition from Belmont University in Nashville, and a doctorate in Worship Studies (DWS) from the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies in Jacksonville, FL. David’s doctoral thesis  focused on the topic of congregational psalmody: its history, various forms, and usage in the contemporary church. His thesis culminated in the development of a new form of psalm chant for modern congregations, known as twelve-point chant. For more on David's compositions and work with congregational psalmody, visit his personal website: www.davidmadeira.com

As Director of Music, David plans and leads musical worship on Sunday mornings, directing the choir and playing various instruments with the band. He arranges music for our unique instrumentation, writes hymn tunes and psalm settings, and has composed numerous works for the choirs of St. B's.

Outside of work, David loves to hike, garden, drink coffee and craft beer, and has a particular weak spot for hot chicken. He and his wife, Elizabeth, and children Nathaniel, Evie, and Sonia, live in Franklin.
